Examining Two Memoirs, “I Am Alive” and “Sheena's Daughter”, based on the Conceptual Metaphor of the Domain of Feeling

Abstract

This study examines the function of conceptual metaphor in two memoirs, “I'm Alive” and “Sheena's Daughter”. Based on this, text analysis is a qualitative analysis obtained through frequencies. Ontological metaphor, the domain of the destination of feeling, and the domains of its origin and their function are the basis of this research. The findings show that the ontological metaphor with the purpose it feels, and the objects of origin are numerous: "force", "container", "objects", "temperature", "food", "liquid inside the container", "goods" and "burden" have a high frequency in both books. The compositions "the heart is the container", "emotion is the liquid inside the container", "emotion is temperature", "the effect of emotion is force" have a significant frequency in both books. However, some compositions in the book "I am alive" have a higher frequency, which is caused by the special situation of the narrator in captivity. The analysis of these metaphors shows that women take help from tangible and familiar environmental phenomena related to women's world to convey their abstract and emotional concepts and create a large amount of ontological metaphors. Women's thoughts are a mixture of feelings and details of the world outside the mind, which express many daily actions and concerns, and make them see more of the existing conditions and think less idealistically.
