Abstract

Mental spaces constitute one of the fundamental concepts in cognitive linguistic theories. The primary application of this theory is to explain how meaning is processed in the human mind, with the aim of understanding the interaction among language, thought, and cognition. Mental Spaces Theory was first proposed in 1985 by Gilles Fauconnier, a Swiss philosopher, to address certain linguistic problems. This theory emphasizes the formation of temporary and dynamic structures in the human mind to demonstrate how semantic networks and related mental structures play a fundamental role in analyzing and comprehending complex meanings. Accordingly, the present study examined the application of this theory in analyzing the discourse of the Holy Qur’an concerning the concepts of resistance. In this regard, five verses from Hajj, Anfal, and Baqarah Surahs were selected within the conceptual domain of believers’ resistance against polytheists. Subsequently, using a descriptive-analytical method, the selected vocabulary was examined within the theoretical framework of Mental Spaces Theory. The analysis of related semantic layers within the context of the Quranic verses and the assessment of the theory’s efficacy in achieving a deeper comprehension of the verses’ meanings constituted the primary objectives of this study. The findings indicated that divine verses employ various strategies in constructing resistance discourse, among which the utilization of mental space construction in accurately depicting the concepts of resistance proves to be most effective. This study demonstrated that Mental Spaces Theory can serve as an innovative approach in the analysis, interpretation, and more precise and enriched translation of divine verses, functioning as an effective tool to convey the divine message to the audience in a comprehensive and impactful manner.
