The literature of the Sacred Defense—as one of the most influential movements in contemporary Persian poetry—reflects the human, social, and moral experiences of wartime and the postwar period. Among its various forms, humor occupies a distinctive place, as it creates a distance from the purely epic atmosphere and provides a means for critique, reflection, and the reconstruction of values. This study, drawing on Incongruity Theory, analyzes the techniques of humor in Sacred Defense poetry. The aim is to explain the mechanisms of laughter and awareness in these works and to show how humor reveals the tension between the ideals of war and the social realities that followed. The research follows a qualitative, descriptive–analytical method. Data have been collected from the works of prominent poets in this field, including Abdolmalekian, Biabanki, Mo’addab, Nouri Gandomabad, Sadeghi, and others. The findings indicate that humor in these poems appears on two main levels: Verbal humor, which employs rhetorical devices such as irony, pun, paronomasia, and allusion; and Situational humor, which is based on value inversion, surprise, and behavioral or social contradictions. The results show that humor in Sacred Defense poetry does not function as mere jesting but rather as a cognitive process of perceiving the conflict between ideal and reality. Laughter in these works is not a sensory reaction but an act of enlightenment—guiding the reader’s mind from the surface layers of language toward a deeper understanding of truth, morality, and the spirit of the times.
