In his theory of communication, Roman Jakobson mentions six linguistic functions-emotive, conative, referential, metalingual, phatic, and poetic-among which the conative function becomes more salient when the message’s orientation is toward the addressee. In this respect, the poem Hawāmish ʿalā Daftar al-Naksah by Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998), written after the defeat of Arabs at the hands of Israel in 1967 and afterward recognized as a milestone in resistance literature, would be appropriate ground for analyzing the conative function of language. Of vital importance, the current study explains the role, which poetic language plays in achieving the goals of resistance literature. As a descriptive-analytic attempt, the present study tries to show how and through which stylistic devices the language of Hawāmish ʿalā Daftar al-Naksah turns to be an instrument for persuading the addressee and provoking him for an action, as well as which linguistic strategies play a more effective role in the realization of this function. Accordingly, and in light of Jakobson’s communicative theory, the main aim of this paper is to investigate the linguistic structure of the poem in question. The results reveal that Qabbani did not allow the addressee to slip into passivity by using imperative and prohibitive verbs; he confirmed his message and created an emotional rhythm through skillful repetition; he evoked emotional bonds and a sense of collective responsibility through resonant vocatives; he maintained the spirit of resistance and transformation in the addressee through rhetorical and literary devices as emotional and cognitive stimuli.
