Accordingly, Mahmoudi’s poetry is examined as a discursive text that, through its interaction with structures of power, knowledge, and ideology, participates in the production of meaning and truth about war and its consequences, drawing on Michel Foucault’s theoretical framework. The primary aim of this study is to elucidate how Soheil Mahmoudi’s poetry, through linguistic choices, symbols, and semantic structures, contributes to the reproduction or, in certain instances, the contestation—of the identities of the combatant, the martyr, and the homeland within Sacred Defense literature. The research adopts a qualitative and analytical approach based on Foucault’s three-level model (text, discursive practice, and social practice). To this end, selected poems by Mahmoudi were purposefully chosen and analyzed in terms of their linguistic structures, modes of discursive production and consumption, and their social and ideological implications. The findings indicate that Mahmoudi’s poetry plays a significant role in reproducing the discourse of sacralizing the homeland and mythologizing resistance, and that it stabilizes the historical memory of war in an ideological form through an aesthetics of suffering and martyrdom. At the same time, the poet’s later works reveal signs of an emerging identity crisis and a critical distancing from the pure discourse of Sacred Defense. Overall, the results demonstrate that Soheil Mahmoudi’s poetry simultaneously functions as a site for the consolidation of the Sacred Defense discourse and as a space for its potential rethinking. Critical Discourse Analysis thus enables a deeper understanding of the relationship between language, power, and historical memory in contemporary Iranian literature.
