Prisoner of Faw (2013) by Imad Jabbar Zaalan al-Kanaani is written in the form of a memoir and narrates the memory of this Iraqi sergeant's imprisonment in the Faw operational area. This study aims at criticizing the selected work based on Edward Said's theory of ‘Contrapuntal Reading’ in order to determine the function of culture and media in identity formation. Moreover, we seek to categorize the groups and components of resistance in the selected memoir based on the model proposed by Gholamreza Kafi in a coordinated, systematic and convergent manner. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the present study seeks to provide answer for the following questions: Which component of resistance in Prisoner of Faw (2013) plays a more significant role in familiarizing the new generation with the Islamic values of its pioneers? What are the impacts of media on acculturation? The researcher makes use of descriptive-analytic methodology to conduct his research. The frequencies as well as the percentages of resistance components reveal that the “components based on the foundation of identity” have the higher frequency than the others. To conclude, contrapuntal reading of Prisoner of Faw (2013) shows that the identity of the narrator is constructed by traditional Iraqi culture and the discourse power of media. While the narrator is considered as no more than an inferior object in the eyes of the ruling class, he prepares the ground for his own transition from the state of "objectification". He is being acculturated by the Iranian combatants and becomes an independent subject.
