Ta‘ziyeh, as the most prominent form of ritual drama in the cultural traditions of Shiʿa communities in Iran and the Arab world, plays a fundamental role in representing the tragedy of Ashura and transmitting the concepts of resistance, steadfastness, and sacrifice. Unlike modern individual-centered drama, characters in Ta‘ziyeh are shaped through ritual, typological, and symbolic roles; through their performative actions, rhetorical discourse, and value-laden positions, they reproduce the “discourse of resistance.”
This study offers a comparative analysis of characterization techniques in the Ta‘ziyeh of Imam Husayn’s martyrdom within two performative traditions: the Persian version (the written Litin manuscript from the Qajar era) and the Arabic tradition of Nabatiyya in Lebanon. The data consist of the two Ta‘ziyeh scripts along with relevant intertextual analyses. The research adopts a qualitative, descriptive–analytical approach, examining characters based on three components: performative action, speech and emotional–rhetorical charge, and ritual–ideological status.
The findings indicate that in both traditions, characters possess symbolic and value-centered functions, and their internal fixity serves as the main mechanism for conveying the Ashura message. However, the Arabic Ta‘ziyeh, with its emphasis on action-oriented scenes and dialogic confrontations, depicts resistance as “active struggle” and “practical commitment,” whereas the Persian Ta‘ziyeh—highlighting mourning, collective emotion, and the sacred solitude of Imam Husayn—foregrounds “spiritual patience” and “inner resilience.”
Overall, the study shows that characterization in Ta‘ziyeh operates as a central means for representing the discourse of resistance, with the two traditions offering distinct yet complementary constructions of this discourse.
