The novel Al-Farashat wal- Ghilan (2016) by Ezeddine Jalaveji depicts the massacre of Kosovo’s Muslims by the Serbs. This article, employing a descriptive–analytical approach and based on Yuri Lotman’s theory of the “semiotic sphere,” examines the concept of semantic contradiction in scene construction within the novel. According to Lotman’s theory, every place carries its own semantic boundaries, which shift under conditions of crisis.
The main research question is how Jalawji, by creating a rift between the cultural and symbolic function of places (what they ought to be) and their imposed function in the world of war (what they actually are), turns scene construction into a tool for communicating his critical message.
Findings show that in this novel, the home transforms from a safe haven into a scene of murder, the mosque from a place of worship into a slaughterhouse, the father from a heroic figure into a powerless passive one, the hospital from a site of suffering into a cradle of renewed hope, and exile from sheer despair into a source of inner peace. Through these semantic contrasts, the reader first identifies with the layer of the “ought-to-be” space and then, upon entering the layer of the “is” space, experiences a deeper shock. This semantic shock effectively reflects the author’s main critique—the devastating impact of war on the child’s sense of symbolic and emotional security.
